OTC Acne Trust Reset

The challenge
After the FDA tested 95 benzoyl peroxide acne products in 2025, six products with elevated benzene levels were recalled at retail. More than 90% had undetectable or extremely low levels, and the FDA described the cancer risk from the recalled products as very low.
The marketing problem was not the ingredient alone. It was consumer confusion, reduced category trust, and the need for product-level reassurance.
My approach
I combined regulatory, clinical, search-interest, and consumer evidence to answer one question: how should an OTC acne brand rebuild confidence without exaggerating risk or making unsupported claims?
Three needs shaped the strategy:
- Reassurance: Is this specific product tested and safe to use?
- Clarity: What did the FDA findings actually show?
- Usability: How should the product be used while managing irritation?
Strategy
I positioned the hypothetical product around four principles:
- Effective: Lead with the approved acne-treatment purpose and active concentration.
- Verified: Make product and lot testing visible.
- Understandable: Explain the FDA findings in plain, proportionate language.
- Usable: Provide clear directions, storage guidance, and irritation support.
The proposed experience included concise packaging, a verification module on the product page, a quality-information QR code, post-purchase education, and consistent customer-service responses.
Measurement plan
I designed an A/B test comparing a standard benefit-led product page with one adding visible quality verification and concise FDA context.
- Primary KPI: Add-to-cart rate
- Supporting KPIs: FAQ engagement, checkout completion, support contacts, returns, and complaints
- Quality checks: Sample-size planning, confidence intervals, a two-proportion z-test, and sample-ratio-mismatch review
Business value
The result is a practical trust-recovery plan connecting consumer insight, responsible communication, customer experience, and measurement. It demonstrates how I translate complex public evidence into clear marketing decisions.
